Evolving news on the science, writing and thinking about Near Death Experiences (NDEs)

Believe it or not.

Apologies for the delay in creating this post, but I recently moved from the UK to New Zealand, starting a new job at the same time, so I have been somewhat distracted!

As the eternal hunt for a scientifically validated OBE in an NDE continues (slowly), and the realisation dawns on researchers that it may be many years before such an event occurs, the community is required to continue to rely on human validation. This paper is an attempt to create a tool that seeks to objectively measure the reliability of these “humanly verified” NDEs. Thanks Paul for alerting us to this article

Scale Construction

The development of the vNDE evidential strength scale followed the Delphi Method using feedback from a panel of experts. The process involved circulating a draft scale among 11 experts for review and revision in two rounds, allowing time for detailed input and fostering consensus. Initially, the scale covered seven criteria; after expert discussion and consensus (80% agreement), the final version included eight well-defined criteria, each designed to rigorously assess aspects of the near-death experience and its verification.

Scale Criteria

The final scale contains eight items, covering critical aspects such as the timing of the investigation, the experiencer’s physical and medical state, the occurrence of cardiac or respiratory arrest, the degree of third-person verification, possibility of sensory explanations, the number of verified and erroneous perceptions, and the clarity of recalled perceptions. For each criterion, evaluators are required to provide both a rating and a written justification, lending qualitative depth to the scoring process.

Scale Scoring

Scores from each of the eight items are summed, resulting in a total between 0 and 32. This total score is then mapped to one of four predetermined levels of evidential strength (very low, low, moderate, or strong) aligned with the quartiles of possible scores. The highest tier, “strong,” requires not only a high total score but also a high rating in third-person verification, ensuring robust evidential support.

Scale Validation

The vNDE Scale was validated by having 13 experts and three AI language models (ChatGPT v.4, Gemini Pro, and Mistral Medium 3) independently apply it to 17 potential veridical near-death experiences (vpNDEs) detailed in nine peer-reviewed papers (most people would be familiar with these cases that have been discussed here and on the web extensively). The selection of cases was based on strict inclusion criteria, ensuring each paper provided sufficient detail and had undergone peer review. AI raters were included to assess the feasibility of automating the scale’s application and to help counterbalance possible human biases, particularly where personal beliefs could influence scoring. Out of 13 experts, 11 completed the evaluations (with two collaborating on a joint response), while the AI models followed a standardised prompt to apply the scale to each case using the relevant sections of the papers.

My thoughts

In summary the vNDE scale they created had 8 different evidential criteria, each with their own rating scale (from 1-4), which contributed to an overall score (max 32) reflecting the quality of the evidence supporting the veracity of the OBE within an NDE.

Given the baseline requirement of the cases being presented in peer reviewed journals, and also the requirement for an independent witness, the quality is already higher than many. However, this scale refines things further to determine if the sum of evidence reported and presented is strong or not in relation to the NDE being reliable evidence of an independent consciousness or not.

Below is the kind of output that was generated:

What is notable is that in the majority of cases a consensus of specific strength was not reached (e.g. strong vs moderate). However when adjacent levels were considered (e.g. strong or moderate), things improved. There was reasonable consensus within the AI models, and between AI and humans, although some wild discrepancies as well.

Given the fact that the tool failed to create consistent precise consensus between the expert assessors, it is clear that the ability to quantify the levels of strength is not quite objective enough, and allows for subjective inter-assessor interpretation. It also shows (once again) that AI while promising, cannot be fully relied upon to replace humans, even for a task that it should be ideally qualified to perform.

Having said that, in the absence of an OBE verified using electronic equipment like in AWARE II, this is about as good as it gets for now. Further refinement of this tool creating better alignment between expert assessors will no doubt lead to a fully validated tool that can be incorporated in future research.

The other outcome of this study is the fact that AI and the expert panel agreed that the three top cases in the table above had strong evidence to support the validity of the OBEs. We should bank that for now and use these three as exemplary examples of well documented OBEs with third party witnesses. I am glad that the AWARE I OBE is in this group.

Lastly I just wanted to cover a recent poster presented by the Parnia lab at AHA recently (thanks Z). It is somewhat related to the previous article, so worth shoving in here:

Summary of Abstract:

Background: About 10% of cardiac arrest survivors experience vivid Recalled Experiences of Death (RED) marked by clear awareness and a sense of life review, which can enhance quality of life. Although often dismissed as hallucinations or dreams, this study uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) to objectively distinguish RED from dreams and drug-induced states.

Hypothesis: NLP can differentiate RED accounts in cardiac arrest patients from other altered states based on thematic content, informing our understanding of consciousness during clinical death.

Methods: Researchers analyzed 3,700 anonymized first-person narratives: 1,245 RED, 1,190 dream, and 1,265 drug-induced reports, using keyword filtering and transformer-based models (Longformer for narrative classification; BERT for RED theme identification).

Results: The Longformer model achieved 98% validation F1-score and 100% holdout accuracy, accurately classifying all holdout drug narratives without needing substance names. The BERT model identified RED-specific themes with 90% validation and 87% holdout F1-scores.

Conclusion: Transformer-based NLP can effectively distinguish RED from other experiences, revealing distinct and structured patterns, and providing an objective method for analyzing survivor narratives and related psychological outcomes.

My Interpretation

Parnia’s utilisation of artificial intelligence to analyse the narrative content of two distinct types of experiences—Recalled Experiences of Death (RED) and those induced by drugs or dreams—demonstrates that AI is capable of reliably distinguishing between authentic near-death experiences and other altered states. Although the outcomes are inherently influenced by the subjective prompts provided to the AI models, the findings nonetheless reinforce the view that REDs are unique and fundamentally different in character from both “natural” and “artificial” hallucinations or experiences.

Moreover, this approach contributes to the development of more objective methodologies for differentiating between these reports. By leveraging AI as a tool for analysis, it becomes possible to more clearly separate genuine REDs from other experiences, supporting the argument that these phenomena possess distinguishing features that set them apart from ordinary dreams or drug-induced perceptions.

We ain’t going to get any hits on visual targets if they either don’t use targets, or the targets they use are hidden and secret.

Penny told me she designed her study to deliberately exclude telepathy.

Considering the many NDE / NDE OBE experients who following their NDE, much later report that they have developed an increased ability to know/sense things they should not know. It’s odd that all options regarding recall of anomalous information are not investigated in these studies.

Spontaneous access to anomalous information is such a common human experience, it’s extremely surprising that after decades of papers written about NDE / NDE OBE’s we still have zero studies scientifically measuring the general visual accuracy of recalled NDE OBEs.

Good evening to all the blog’s readers.

Recently, I read an article published in 2018 — in this case, I read the Portuguese version translated by an administrator of a blog here in my country — about a study that honestly startled me, if everything it claims is indeed true.

    https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0010945223002733

To be completely honest, if these results are factual and later replicated by other researchers for confirmation (personally, I am unaware of any replications), this is by far the strangest and most impressive phenomenon I have ever come across.

I have read accounts of mediums or psychics that seem to support the authenticity of this type of phenomenon — such as the case of Felicia Parise — but I have always had sincere doubts about the accuracy of what researchers claimed, especially when it involved large-scale manifestations. However, this article states, quite categorically, that at the micro level the results were statistically significant.

I apologize for the somewhat startled tone, Ben, but indeed, if all of this is true, it is one of the most astonishing things I have ever read.

        Good evening, Paul.
        Thank you for your comment.

The phenomenon described in the article is known here in my country as Micro-PK (and I believe it goes by the same name in English-speaking countries). I consider this phenomenon — if it is indeed real, as the researchers claim — to be one of the most intriguing, precisely because it involves questions that, in my view, challenge basic notions of physics. In fact, I cannot see any possible physical interaction mechanism that could account for such results, even acknowledging that I do not have deep expertise in physics.

I wish you an excellent start to the week there in the United Kingdom!

In the article I read in Portuguese — available only in Portuguese, unfortunately for those who are not familiar with the language — published on the Obras Psicografadas blog (link: https://obraspsicografadas.org/2018/interacoes-mente-materia-e-os-lobos-frontais-do-cerebro-um-novo-modelo-neurobiologico-de-inibicao-de-psi-2018/), the study’s abstract states that:

“Context: Despite the extensive literature on psi—which encompasses a variety of experiences, including alleged telepathy (mind-to-mind connections), clairvoyance (perception of distant objects or events), precognition (perception of future events), and mind-matter interactions—there has been insufficient focus on the brain in relation to these controversial phenomena. In contrast, our research is based on a new neurobiological model suggesting that frontal brain systems act as a filter that inhibits psi, and that inhibitory mechanisms may relate to self-awareness.

Objective: To identify frontal brain regions that may inhibit psi.

Design: We used mind-matter interactions to study psi in two participants with frontal lobe damage. The experimental task was to influence the numerical outcome of a random event generator, translated into a leftward or rightward movement of an arrow on a computer screen. Brain MRI was analyzed to determine frontal volume loss.

Results: The primary lesion area overlaps between the participants in the left frontal metamedial region, an area related to self-awareness and involving Brodmann areas 9, 10, and 32. Both participants showed a significant effect in moving the arrow to the right—that is, contralateral to the side of the overlapping primary lesion. The effect sizes were much larger compared to normal participants.

Conclusions: The medial frontal lobes may act as a biological filter that inhibits psi through mechanisms related to self-awareness. Neurobiological studies focused on the brain may open new research avenues on psi and significantly advance the state of this poorly understood field.”

In fact, I am providing these details because the link I shared earlier appears to refer to the 2024 article, written by the same authors, in which they expand on the issues previously mentioned. Google, however, directed me only to the 2024 article and not to the 2018 study — I apologize for the mistake. Nevertheless, I noticed that the 2024 article makes direct reference to the original 2018 study.

Unfortunately, I was unable to locate the original 2018 article, which I regret. However, I can confirm that the text available on the website is a translation of the 2018 article.

(Sorry for the long comment, Ben.)

    • I wrote about this paper earlier this year…

The sham rTMS controls weren’t the same experiment as the rTMS they wanted to study, – i.e. they used different coils.

Random Number Generators (RNG’s) are a problem, and even worse, they are using a PSI RNG.

The experiment took place 2-3 minutes after the TMS was carried out. TMS creates a massive pulsed magnetic field from energy stored in large capacitors, the magnetic field is equivalent to an MRI machine, which is going to affect the RNG output directly, and indirectly, if the TMS equipment was anywhere near the RNG, or shared the RNG’s power supply.

        Good afternoon from Brazil, Max.

Some time ago, I read an article written by Professor Etzel Cardeña from Lund University, originally published in American Psychologist, in which he reviews experiments related to Extrasensory Perception (ESP) and micro-PK.

In the section dedicated to ESP, Cardeña concludes that the accumulated evidence is statistically robust. In the case of micro-PK, however, he notes that many studies should be interpreted with caution, as their results are statistically borderline.

Nevertheless, one particular study — conducted by Roger Nelson and known as the Global Consciousness Project — received special attention in Cardeña’s review. According to him, this project produced statistically significant results, reaching a probability on the order of 1 in 1 trillion against chance after about fifteen years of data collection and analysis.

I recently became curious to study this project in more depth. From what I could observe, it seems to maintain a reasonable level of transparency. Still, I have personal doubts about the criteria used to define what constitutes a “globally significant event.” The researchers claim that event categories were registered following a rigorous selection protocol, including global holidays, New Year’s celebrations, and unexpected occurrences such as wars, climatic disasters, or human-caused catastrophes, for instance.

Here is the link to the project’s website:
        https://noosphere.princeton.edu/fristwall.page.por.html

I also noticed that researcher Dean Radin is deeply involved with the project — and I consider Radin a serious and honest parapsychologist. I will soon send an old video in which he comments on the topic.

Good start of the week to all blog readers.

Some time ago, I believe I mentioned a phenomenon that has been studied both by parapsychologists and by researchers in mainstream science: psychography. It is a relatively common phenomenon in some regions of Brazil, especially in Kardecist Spiritist centers.

Perhaps I have not mentioned this before, but I am a firm follower of Kardecist Spiritism, proposed by Allan Kardec in France. After many studies and personal experiences, I became convinced of several aspects of this doctrine — which may sound unusual to some, as it brings together parapsychological elements with the Judeo-Christian tradition, particularly traditional Christianity. Among the investigators of this field was Dr. Waldo Vieira, who founded his own research laboratory and authored the treatise Projeciology.

I am writing this because I would like to share three studies related to psychography — one of them particularly interesting because it was conducted in Brazil and involved the validation of three psychographed letters through a handwriting analysis performed by the experienced forensic examiner Isabel Cristina Lima de Sousa.

    These are the works:

    1. The controlled statistical study by Dr. Patrizio Tressoldi, from the University of Padua.
    2. The study published in the journal Transcultural Psychiatry, associated with mainstream science, conducted in Brazil.
    3. The Brazilian article containing the handwriting expert report by Ms. Isabel, validating three letters attributed to psychography.

Below, I include the original technical conclusion of the report by forensic examiner Isabel Cristina Lima de Sousa, now translated into English:

    RESULTS OF THE EXAMINATIONS

The handwritten texts contained in the documents under study present graphic similarities compatible with the handwriting samples provided by Mr. Francisco Erionilton Ivo de Sousa (Nilton). Meanwhile, the entries corresponding to the signatures affixed at the end of the aforementioned documents show strong graphic affiliation with the handwriting specimens, the authentic standard, of their respective signatories.

After the analyses carried out, based on the technical knowledge acquired over approximately 30 years in the performance of my duties as an Official Forensic Document Examiner of the State of Ceará, and considering that this was a unique assignment — as it involved psychographed writings — despite not being a Spiritist myself, it was necessary to research the doctrinal field of Spiritism through Allan Kardec’s works on psychography, as well as to observe and accompany in loco the manifestations and active modes of the medium during the act of the psychographies. Only then was it possible to reach the conclusion that the letters examined were handwritten by the medium Mr. Francisco Erionilton Ivo de Sousa (Nilton), under the influence of an external driving force exerted upon the writing hand of the medium at the moment of writing (PSYCHOGRAPHING).

I tried not to see and to find nothing; however, I saw what I did not wish to see and found what I did not expect to find. Ultimately, having reached the conviction of the connection between Graphotechnics and Psychography, I hope to assist our fellow human beings in the search for understanding and acceptance, through free will, of the influence of discarnate spirits upon incarnate spirits, thus strengthening the truthfulness of psychography.

For those who wish to explore further, here are the three referenced articles:

    Statistical study by Tressoldi:

Brazilian article with the complete handwriting expert report:

Finally, I share a personal aspect: I became a Kardecist Spiritist also because I came very close to death. I had severe sepsis of pulmonary origin, and according to medicine, my chances of survival were minimal. Yet I survived without sequelae, thanks to God. This experience strengthened my spiritual search and my interest in research on consciousness and parapsychological phenomena.

I wish everyone an excellent week!

Happy weekend to all the readers of the blog!
There is a channel dedicated primarily to the study and dissemination of Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) called “Afinal, o que somos nós” (“After All, What Are We?”), which interviews people who have gone through this type of experience.
The channel is run by physicist Carlos Mendes and neurosurgeon Dr. Edson Amâncio, both Brazilian (I believe I have even mentioned Dr. Amâncio in previous posts).
In a video published about three years ago — which somewhat departs from the channel’s main focus — Carlos Mendes presented footage of what he personally considers to be a UFO, according to his own conclusions. The video can be found at the link below:
    https://youtu.be/IM4X1p4Aggk?si=HVBw4Az2MNIc3Rew
I mention this because, in some of the accounts collected by the channel, certain individuals who underwent NDEs reported observing — and in some cases even filming — objects in the sky, over short time intervals, that appeared to be UFOs near them. According to these reports, there would be some kind of causal connection between the observed phenomenon and the experience itself.
With regard to the UFO phenomenon, I make it clear that I do not claim, nor do I personally agree, that these objects are necessarily of extraterrestrial origin. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that this phenomenon manifested itself in an extremely explicit, recurrent, and even terrifying way during the 1970s in a small Brazilian village called Colares, located in the state of Pará.
This episode became officially known as “Operation Prato” (“Operation Saucer” — a reference to the saucer-like shape attributed to the observed objects). The case was secretly investigated by the Brazilian Armed Forces during the period of the military regime. Decades later, the documents were partially declassified by the Brazilian National Archives, containing photographs, drawings, technical reports, and testimonies from victims who claimed to have been attacked by these objects.
The then Colonel Uyrangê Hollanda, who was responsible for the operation, affirmed the veracity of the events in a video lasting more than one hour. Physicians who treated the victims also confirmed the authenticity of the physical marks left by these phenomena. This is possibly the strangest and best-documented case ever recorded in Brazil, having received validation from military personnel, physicians, local political authorities — who even drafted an official report requesting assistance from the federal government — and from the town’s population itself.
A significant portion of this material can be found:
On the official website of the Brazilian Federal Government (National Archives):
    https://www.gov.br/arquivonacional/pt-br/canais_atendimento/imprensa/noticias/conheca-o-fundo-sobre-ovnis-do-arquivo-nacional
In the National Archives’ collection system:
    https://sian.an.gov.br/sianex/consulta/login.asp
In the public collection made available via Pinterest by the Brazilian government itself:
    https://br.pinterest.com/arquivonacional/ovnis/
The video featuring Colonel Hollanda’s testimony can be found here:
    https://youtu.be/ql0djKXTn7U?si=nhk50dKQpuz6iyGf
In addition to Operation Prato, Brazil also officially recorded another notable episode known as the “Official UFO Night”, investigated by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). On that occasion, pilots reported surprise and shock upon encountering the objects they were pursuing. The case was widely reported by the Brazilian press at the time.
I bring up this context because these phenomena do not seem to fit easily into the classic extraterrestrial hypothesis. Many theorists argue that it would be extremely unlikely for beings from other star systems to travel minimum distances of four light-years, expending unimaginable resources, merely to engage in this kind of interaction.
Nevertheless, the fact remains that such events occurred openly and in a documented manner at least twice in Brazil.
Interestingly, in traditions such as Theosophy, Esoteric Islam, and possibly in initiatic orders such as the Rosicrucian Order (a topic not seriously explored within Kardecist Spiritism), descriptions emerge that strongly resemble the hypothesis proposed by physicist Jacques Vallée: namely, that these phenomena would not originate from another planet, but rather from “here”, although arising from an unknown realm, possibly non-physical or extra-physical.
This perspective significantly broadens the debate and suggests that the phenomenon may be more closely related to the nature of reality and consciousness than to simple interplanetary visitation.

Important note: In this case, the source of the document is a translation from Portuguese into English. I chose not to provide the direct link to the National Archives file because it leads straight to the download of a Brazilian federal government PDF, which may be inconvenient for some users. Moreover, for readers who do not speak Portuguese, accessing the original document would in practice require the use of tools such as Google Translate or AI-based resources via screenshots.
That said, I affirm that this document can be found in the 1977 records of Operation Prato, specifically on page 16, within the Brazilian Federal Government’s National Archives.

    • Hi Lucas, the Brazil Colares incidents are also featured in the recent Skinwalkers At The Pentagon book, by Dr. James Lacatski, Dr. Colm Kelleher and George Knapp. Lacatski was the program manager of the $22 million Defense Intelligence Agency funded 2 year AAWSAP Program and the Brazil case was one of the 2009 monthly reports (AAWSAP was contracted to give monthly reports to the DIA).

The report was called The UFO Assault on Brazil with it’s Epicenter at Colares (1977-2003).

Origins of UFOs are fascinating! We know some have incredible accelerations and Prof. Kevin Knuth (physicist) has speculated some could have interstellar origins because relativistic speeds could be reached – meaning one could in principle travel, say, 10 light years in a few months (the time onboard the craft – the “proper time”).

Saying that, there’s the idea of a parallel civilization on Earth that developed millions of years ago with technology. But there’s something really incredible that’s recently been discovered – thousands of reflecting objects in orbit pre-Sputnik – i.e. pre October 1957. Prof. Beatriz Villarroel and her team have looked at 1950-1956 photographic plates and found these – and published in Nature. Nothing natural can reflect sunlight with the brightness of a star and so many unless they are flat and highly reflective. Whatever’s going on looks like to have been here over millennia, watching, doing things I guess.

Beatriz has said she wants others to share the “ontological shock” she experienced and I agree! Yes, the consciousness aspect of these phenomena is wild, there’s a strong linkage AFAIK.

There is an unofficial portal, not directly affiliated with the Brazilian government, dedicated exclusively to the study and documentation of this historical episode. The portal can be found on Google by searching for: “Operação Prato .com”.

On this website, one can find official documents and leaked materials related to the Colares incident, including records produced by the Brazilian Armed Forces, as well as interviews with physicians who were officially involved in Operation Prato. These medical professionals clinically validated the marks observed on the victims and reported that they personally witnessed manifestations of unidentified flying objects. As far as is known, these doctors are still alive.

There are also photographic records from newspapers of the time showing some of the injuries sustained by the victims, characterized by small, localized perforations, especially in the chest region. According to medical reports, these injuries could not be attributed to fraud, since all examined victims presented confirmed cases of anemia. One physician in particular conducted multiple hematological examinations that corroborated this condition. According to the victims’ own testimonies, the objects emitted beams of light, caused temporary paralysis, and subsequently extracted their blood.

It is important to emphasize that, in what I consider — with due sincerity — a serious lack of respect toward the victims, some skeptics have claimed, without presenting any empirical evidence, that the events constituted a collective hysteria involving thousands of people who allegedly imagined being attacked by UFOs. Such a hypothesis ignores central facts of the case, such as the documented anemia observed in hundreds of victims, as well as the consistent accounts from physicians and military personnel who also reported observing the same objects simultaneously.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that lights and objects were effectively photographed and that this material was forwarded to the Army command, the highest military authority available at the time, further reinforcing the seriousness with which the phenomenon was institutionally treated.

Another central point—of a historical nature—that demonstrates how seriously the Brazilian Federal Government treated this event is the political context in place at the time. During that specific period, Brazil was living under the Military Regime, meaning that the Armed Forces exercised direct control over the State.

It is a widely documented historical fact that the regime imposed severe punishments on those who provided false information, withheld relevant data, or improperly activated the military apparatus to deal with matters considered strategic or related to national security. Official communications involving potential threats or events of a military nature were handled with extreme rigor.

Within this context, municipal governments were fully subordinated to the military government and were required to maintain formal, responsible, and precise communications with federal authorities. The digitized document mentioned earlier belongs to one such municipality and is particularly revealing: the tone adopted in the communication addressed to the military authorities conveys panic, urgency, and distress, which is incompatible with any attempt at fraud, exaggeration, or fabrication.

The military personnel sent to investigate the events in Colares were trusted officers of the Army, directly responsible for submitting formal reports to the high command. Any form of lying, distortion of facts, or deliberate omission could result in severe consequences, including imprisonment for an indefinite period and, in extreme cases, even the death penalty—a reality well known to all those involved.

All of these elements related to the functioning of the military regime can be easily verified through basic research in public sources, such as Google, and more thoroughly in history books and archival documents. This context powerfully reinforces the institutional seriousness with which the Colares case was treated by the Brazilian authorities at the time.

      • Sure, I have read of the injuries and these effects of UFOs are very real. I know that Prof. Garry Nolan (a world expert on blood analysis and Nobel Prize nominee) of Stanford was visited by two CIA officials who asked him to study people with injuries who had been exposed to UFOs. He’s now set up the Sol Foundation with other academics. Great interviews there on related stuff on their website and they’ve had a few conferences. From what I’ve read in general there are possible “attacks” by these objects (Colares) as well as just chance encounters. Either way, folks are getting injured and killed I think. Pretty nasty stuff.

  15. Hello Ben and others!

As I can see your focus of interest is not only about NDE but also biology, DNA and origins of life.

Maybe i’s an offtop but have you ever heard/read of a very inriguing discovery by Max Makukov and Vladimir Shcherbak on genetic code signatures?

AFAIK it is known not too well. It has been misrepresented and blacklashed (that knee-jerk anathema on anything even resembling the nasty ID heresy))) probably in most of internet sources but the original articles are also available.
